Preparing qualified and competent geography professionals who possess solid theoretical knowledge and applied skills, and are able to analyze and interpret geographical phenomena through scientific approaches and modern technological tools.

The Department of Geography seeks to achieve a leading role in education and research in geographical sciences and technologies, and to make an effective contribution to addressing various societal issues.

The Department is also concerned with the study of natural and human phenomena and the interrelationships between them, identifying their characteristics and patterns of distribution. It works to provide and develop nationally qualified and field-trained competencies in various geographical fields, contributing to the achievement of development plan objectives and meeting labor market requirements.

The Department seeks to engage with the community through scientific research conducted across various geographical fields related to the surrounding environment, encompassing both natural and human aspects.

The Department of Geography seeks to prepare and graduate specialized and effective geographical cadres capable of meeting educational requirements, while simultaneously employing modern applied technologies. Graduates are equipped with skills in spatial investigation, interpretation, and analysis of diverse geographical phenomena. This is achieved through approved academic programs aimed at building qualified and well-trained national competencies that meet the needs of the local labor market, while enriching scientific research through scholarly studies and increasing effective contributions to community service and environmental development.

Based on the recommendations of the College Registration Department, which indicated that many parents have inquired about the possibility of studying in the Department of Geography, and in order to provide opportunities for holders of the General Secondary School Certificate from the Arts stream to enroll in other academic departments not previously available within the College, approval was granted to add this specialization among the offered programs. It should be noted that this specialization is already offered and officially recognized within the Faculties of Education at the University of Gharyan.

• Conducting research and studies and providing scientific consultations to various centers, departments, and institutions within the community and the surrounding area (the city of Gharyan).
• Enhancing students’ academic and practical competencies through offering diverse courses of an academic, educational, and cultural nature, in addition to teaching practice and research based on desk studies and fieldwork, all aimed at the proper preparation of college graduates.
• Training students to use modern methods and technologies in the fields of planning and environmental studies, such as environmental impact assessment of development projects, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies.
• Highlighting the importance of geography and its various fields through an emphasis on scientific research and the publication of distinguished research papers in local and electronic journals, as well as participation in scientific conferences across Libyan universities to present research findings and disseminate results and recommendations that contribute to addressing environmental problems.
• Strengthening cooperation between the Department and similar departments in local universities through the exchange of expertise and participation in scientific seminars and conferences, thereby connecting faculty members with their counterparts in other universities and keeping pace with the latest developments in the various branches of geography, contributing to opening broader employment opportunities for graduates.
• Encouraging students to actively participate in the Department’s scientific and cultural activities and field studies, fostering stronger connections between the Department and students, and promoting teamwork and responsibility.
• Continuously developing educational and research outcomes, and providing geographical data, information, and consultations necessary for future planning in the fields of population, urban development, economics, environment, natural hazards, and sustainable development, utilizing various modern technologies.
